Dan Hunter-Smith was born in 1955 in Columbia, S.C. but raised in Cincinnati, OH. He was
educated at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and at the Ohio State College of Medicine in
Columbus, Ohio, with further training in Family Medicine and Geriatrics in Chicago. Dan teaches
Family Medicine in the La Grange Family Medicine Residency program, La Grange, IL.
Dan’s volunteer activities have focused on University Church in Hyde Park. He has served as
the church treasurer for 24 years and has enjoyed singing in the choir since 1981. He is chair of
the board of the Covenantal Community of University Church and sits on the board of the
Woodlawn Development Association – both ministries focused on providing affordable housing
in Woodlawn. He has traveled 5 times to Guatemala with the congregation’s Guatemala
Partnership program, and works with the group to raise funds for scholarships for Mayan youth
and other community projects. He loves working in the kitchen during the Mary Herrick
Scholarship fall fundraiser, having been recruited for the job by May Lord and treasuring his
memories of Mary Herrick.
